Motorists and pedestrians have condemned Harare’s drainage system following flash floods that were experienced during the weekend.

Over the years, the rainy season has presented drainage challenges particularly for the City of Harare and surrounding residential suburbs due to clogged and poor drains.

The situation witnessed during the weekend showed that flash floods have become a characteristic of Harare’s central business district exposing the city fathers for failing to deal with the city’s drainage system.

“The public must also be responsible through the use of bins and designated rubbish dumpsites in order to minimise on garbage that often finds its way into the drains,” said Harare City Council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme.

Considering the season has just started the situation might be worse if there is no action taken.

Poor and blocked drainage systems during storms cause traffic jams and congestion and sometimes road accidents.
